This classic UFOlogy text documents a pivotal moment in UFO representation in mainstream and academic circles and refutes the findings of the controversial Condon Committee, the informal name of the Scientific Study of Unidentified Flying Objects. The committee was funded by the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1968 at the University of Colorado under the direction of CU physicist Edward Condon. The Condon Report concluded the study of UFOs was unlikely to yield major scientific discoveries and is considered a decisive factor in the subsequent low level of interest in UFO activity among academics.
Signed with a lengthy self-deprecating inscription by R. Roger Harkins, Boulder Daily Camera writer and freelance investigative journalist. Co-authored with David R. Saunders, professor of psychology, a member of NICAP and one of the principal investigators on the Condon Committee until he was removed.
Originally written as an expose article submitted for publication but not printed and anticipating the Committee’s recommendation against continued government UFO research, Harkins and Saunders rushed into publication in advance of the Condon Committee Final Report.
UFOs? Yes! presents specific cases and evidence to assert UFOs as likely to be vehicles from outer space. It questions why scientists on the project were removed from the Committee or their conclusion ignored. It suggests that the CIA used the Committee as a means to divert public attention from UFOs because Condon ignored legitimate UFO cases and the Final Report was formulated in advance in a biased manner.
