Aelita also known as Aelita, or The Decline of Mars is a 1923 science fiction novel by Russian author Alexei N Tolstoy’s (1883–1945).  A remote relative of Leo Tolstoy through his father’s family. 


Gusev, a former Red Army officer bored with civilian life joins an expedition to Mars and then a rebellion of the native proletariat, who are in fact long-ago emigrants from Atlantis. His partner, Los falls in love with the beautiful daughter of the ruling class, Aelita.

The novel was adapted into a screen play in 1924 and the films futuristic, expressionistic sets influenced the design in Flash Gordon, a space opera radio serial and went on to inspire several more films.
