Full author photo on the back cover. Bright red top stain. The novel was adapted into film as The 13th Warrior (1999), in which Crichton did some uncredited directing.  Antonio Banderas played Ibn Fadlan. This book is from the library of noted Colorado collector Mark Harms and scarce in this condition. 

The Lovecraft connection. 
In the bibliography, Crichton cites the “Necronomicon” of Abdul Az‐hared, "an imaginary work that the amateur demonologists in H. P.
